FAQ

Why use an architect?

If you have not worked with an architect before then it is understandable that it may all seem a bit overwhelming. But really, we make the process much easier and are worth our fees many times over. Just ask my happy clients!

We have the qualifications, professional training, vision and experience to manage the complex design and construction process for you. We will help you define and create what you want, present options you may never have considered, and help you get the most from your budget.

Architects are experts in solving problems of space and function and I personally produce buildings that are inspiring to live in and exceptionally energy efficient.

What are your fees?

It’s much more affordable than you might think!

My overheads are lower than most architects so I am able to pass those savings onto my clients.

I will work with you and agree on a fee based on your requirements and the services you require. (*refer SERVICES for more detail)

The basis of the fee can vary, depending on the type and complexity of the project. For the majority of projects I work simply as an agreed fixed sum, apportioned to each stage of the process.

What about project Cost Control?

Critical. I almost always work with a Quantity Surveyor (Cost Consultant) who are typically within 5% of the tender price. Bringing projects in on budget is part of the reason my clients keep coming back; and about a third of my projects over the past 30 years are repeat clients!

Why do most of your projects appear different from each other?

I treat each project individually; exploring in great detail the site, context, client brief and budget as well as the constraints and opportunities; while always searching for ways to enhance sustainability.

You benefit by having a unique custom designed house to enhance your lifestyle and your valuable asset!

Do I need to have a house or site before I contact you?

Many of my clients began discussions prior to buying a new property. My advice can be critical in informing what the possibilities are and advising on such aspects as site restrictions, zoning, substantial trees, car access, infrastructure, among the many other possible issues.

What qualifications do you have?

My company Richard Kerr Architecture Pty Ltd is registered with the ARBV (C50996) and I am a Registered Architect (14807) and a 30 year A+ Member of the Australian Institute of Architects (17388). I am also one of the original members of Architeam.
